Authentic Story
10/30/17 - 11/16/17

National Geographic is looking for incredible true stories of real women whose careers, accomplishments, and life achievements have been empowered and inspired by the legacy of Jane Goodall.

Dr. Jane Goodall is many things – she is a scientist and an explorer, certainly, but also a pioneer, a crusader, and a revolutionary. With over 50 years of tireless research and conservation efforts, Jane Goodall’s work has single-handedly recast our entire understanding of the natural world, and in the process, she has also redefined humanity’s role and responsibilities within that world. On top of that, Jane’s career began in an era when sexism was rampant, and it is impossible to appreciate how unprecedented her accomplishments were without appreciating the unique challenges she faced as a woman in science, and how her success opened the door for others behind her. Because of all these things, Jane has also become something else to millions of women and girls – an inspiration.

So when National Geographic discovered over 140 hours of never-before-seen footage of Jane, tucked away in some dusty archive, they knew they were sitting on something incredibly special. That something is their documentary, JANE, in theaters now!

To honor Jane and support the film’s release, National Geographic wants to capture some incredible true stories of women whose careers, accomplishments, and life achievements have been empowered and inspired by the legacy of Jane Goodall. National Geographic wants these women to answer the following question: How has Jane’s legacy pushed you to take the seed of a dream and make it into something real? Don’t just tell us why Jane is an inspiring figure or what she represents to you – tell us how she motivated you, what you’ve achieved, and how you got there. We want these women to have amazing stories on their own, while encapsulating the ripple effect that Jane’s legacy has had on the lives of the people who revere her, and the world at large. Stories don’t have to come from women in the fields of science, research, academics, or activism, but that’s definitely a plus, and keeping in mind Jane’s own spirit of adventure, these stories can involve women anywhere in the world.

Ultimately, we may be asking Tongal filmmakers to capture some of these Women’s Stories for short digital featurettes that showcase the women inspired by Jane.

What you need to Submit:

  • Submissions should include a brief summary of who this person is and what their story is, in 500 characters. Submissions must also include a photo of the participating individual, and must indicate where they are based. In addition, you will have the option to upload a video of the individual, or a biography document.
  • All Story submissions should feature real women of all backgrounds who can speak to the tangible ways in which Jane Goodall has inspired them to bring their dreams to life. Winners may be subject to a background check.
  • National Geographic  is also open to compelling stories of men who are inspired by Jane.
  • Prizing for Stories is not paid unless and until the Winning Story Subject has cooperated fully with Tongal and any filmmaker that may be selected to tell their story.
  • When submitting on someone else’s behalf, please note that the subject must agree to participate for no compensation beyond the Story award. If a Story subject’s participation is contingent on a percentage of potential winnings from the Video phase and/or an additional casting fee then, they are not eligible to participate.

The goal of this project is to source incredible true stories of women whose accomplishments, careers, and passions in life have been empowered and inspired by Jane Goodall. These stories may then be filmed for short digital featurettes that showcase Jane’s lasting legacy, and while it’s great if they come from women in the fields of science, research, academics, or activism, it’s not required, and we’re open to stories from women anywhere in the world, from any background. The main thing is that we find real women who can speak to the tangible ways in which Jane Goodall has empowered them, and that they have their own amazing stories to tell.

--Key Takeaways:

  • Ultimately, if Tongal filmmakers produce these winning Stories as Videos and Nat Geo shares them across its digital platforms, audiences should feel like they’ve discovered or learned something more about Jane Goodall’s incredible impact on the lives of women everywhere, feel inspired to find out more, and to see the movie.

--Target Audience:

  •  Women and men of all ages who attribute their life accomplishments and goals to the legacy and inspiration of Jane Goodall.  The audience ranges in age and background, and encompasses all sorts of Goodall fans, including animal lovers, future scientists and explorers, outdoor adventurers, and world travelers.

--Tone:

  • Inspiring, empowering, authentic, optimistic, motivational, emotionally engaging.

--Exposure:

  • The Videos derived from the Winning Stories are intended for use on Nat Geo’s digital and social channels as well as the National Geographic website.

This Project will consist of one Phase: an Authentic Story Phase. Be sure to read the following information carefully as well as the Official Rules.
